Why and when to visit Badrinath?
Badrinath is a beautiful place with a lot to offer. The mythology associated with this temple is tied to Lord Vishnu. Legend says Vishnu sat here under the Badri tree meditating. The Badri tree was Laxmi, who was trying to protect Vishnu from the harsh weather. Hence, the place got its name ‘Badrinath.’ The Badrinarayan idol in the temple is in a meditative pose, signifying Vishnu’s meditative phase here, under a Badri tree. A canopy made of pure gold is present over the head of the idol. There are idols of Garuda- Vishnu’s vehicle, Kuber- the god of wealth, Ganesh, nar and Narayana, and Goddess Laxmi.
We mentioned that this place is healing because of the hot sulfur spring called Tapt Kund below the temple. During a hot spring bath, your body absorbs some of the minerals. Sulfur is particularly helpful for treating all kinds of skin irritations and infections. Arthritis and digestive disorders also get resolved to some extent through this bath.
The history of this temple is somewhat uncertain. No one knows for sure when and how this temple was built. But Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have found Vishnu’s idol in the Alaknanda river and established it in the temple. Some also believe that this idol wasn’t created by anyone but was Vishnu’s natural manifestation.
The Badrinath shrine is present in a rugged climate that receives heavy snowfall in the winter. Therefore, pilgrims can’t visit the temple after October. The temple remains accessible from May to October of every year. Sometimes, the weather can be sunny, yet some other times it can snow or rain heavily. Hence, this place isn’t the easiest to survive in. Yatris need to pack all essentials for the weather they’ll encounter on this journey.
Regardless of the weather, travelling to Badrinath is something no one will ever regret in their lifetime.
